APPLYING FOR A SCHOLARSHIP
The first step in applying for a scholarship is reviewing the eligibility requirements and the application process below.
Applications open December 1, 2024 and are due by April 1, 2025.
DO YOU QUALIFY?
Review the four requirement categories below to determine if you are eligible to apply for a scholarship.
RECOVERY
- Active in a 12-step recovery program for substance use disorder
- Minimum of one year (12 consecutive months) of recovery by the April 1 application deadline
- Have a sponsor who will submit a letter of recommendation
- Regularly attend meetings, have a home group, and do service work
FINANCIAL
- Demonstrate financial responsibility
- Have a financial need
- Employed at least part-time
- Can provide proof of employment
- Have made financial restitution for any past debts or be in the process of doing so
EDUCATION
- Be enrolled in an academic program or have a plan for the type of academic program you wish to enroll in
- Academic programs funded include: Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Graduate and Ph.D. degree programs, vocational and technical programs, and certifications
- Academic programs must be at an reputable educational institution
- Additional information on the program or certification may required and is subject to approval of the scholarship committee
LOCATION
- Live in the St. Louis or Kansas City region
- You may attend school in any location, as long as St. Louis or Kansas City is your permanent residence.
- St. Louis region: counties served are St. Louis (city and county), St. Charles, Lincoln, Warren, Franklin, Jefferson, Washington, St. Francois, and Ste. Genevieve counties in Missouri, and Madison, St. Clair, Monroe, Montgomery, Bond, Clinton, Jersey, Green, Macoupin, and Calhoun counties in Illinois. View a map here.
- Kansas City region: counties served are Clinton, Clay, Platte, Jackson, Cass, Johnson, Lafayette, Ray, Caldwell, and Carroll counties in Missouri, and Wyandotte, Johnson, Miami, Franklin, Douglas, Leavenworth, and Jefferson counties in Kansas. View a map here.

THE APPLICATION PROCESS
Next, review the application process below. It’s important to be aware of the steps required in the process.
1. Submit Application
- Complete the scholarship application in the application portal by between December 1 – April 1. Applications take about 30 minutes to complete.
- Submit proof of employment by uploading a recent check stub, hire letter, or another form of employment verification.
- You are required to submit a letter of recommendation from your sponsor. This request is done through the application portal.
- All applicants must submit a current photo to verify their identity during interviews.
- You can save your application and come back to it to complete it. You don’t have to finish it in one session.
2. APPLICATION REVIEW
- After you submit your application, it will be reviewed for eligibility by the Scholarship Committee within 48 hours of submission.
- You will receive an email to notify you of your status to advance to the next stage of the process.
- If you are missing parts of your application or if we need additional information, you will have until April 1 to submit those items.

3. INTERVIEWS
- If you qualified for an interview, you will receive an email and text at the beginning of April to sign up for a 20-minute interview time slot.
- Interviews are conducted via Zoom with 1-2 members of our board.
- Interview dates and times will be communicated in your advancement email, but generally occur during the third week of April.

The interview helps further determine eligibility, financial need, and gives us a chance to get to know you better.
4. AWARDS
- Scholarship decisions will be made by May 15. You will receive an email and a notification though the scholarship portal with the amount of your scholarship award, should you be awarded one.
- The scholarship funding will apply to the academic year beginning in the Summer. Funding does not roll over to the next year.
- The final scholarship award amount is determined by the Scholarship Committee and will vary by individual.
- Funds are distributed directly to the educational institution and can be used for books or tuition. No funds will be paid directly to the recipient.
- The average scholarship award is $3,400.
- All recipients must agree to the terms of the scholarship.
